But people don't like it, carving up small states, they liken it to secession!- and find quite original and creative reasons to resist it: look at this tweet for sampler:
RT @tejaswithota: Partitions never succeded pakistan : terror hub, jharkhand : naxal hub , telangana :????? via @tinucherian |
That is a good one.
But I welcome this for two reasons, mainly:
1. It is better to have smaller states- let's accept it- smaller states will show more equitable development than larger ones.
2. More importantly, smaller states are a slap in the face of linguistic chauvinism.
Let's see how it goes, but I am hopeful.

ReplyDeletesorry i was ignorant of harit pradesh:
ReplyDelete"In recent decades, Uttar Pradesh has seen the economic and political rise of the Yadav community, which has a large population and spread in Uttar Pradesh.[15] The Jats, who are a dominant agricultural community spread across Pakistan, Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh, have found themselves in a "politically disadvantageous position" in Western Uttar Pradesh due to this increasing influence of the Yadavs.[15] A separate Harit Pradesh would likely become a prosperous smaller state similar to Haryana and Punjab, under greater political control of local ethnic groups, such as the Jats, Tyagis and Gujjars.[15]"

It is all about identity and power, right?
As Subhadeep Bhattacharjee writes, "Gorkhaland, Bundelkhand, Bhojpur, Saurastha, Harit Pradesh, Mithilanchal, Greater Cooch Behar, Vidarbha, Bodoland, Maru Pradesh, Karbi Anglong, Garoland and Coorg already in demand, Telengana's statehood would lead to complete chaos in the country."
I need a thinking cap! :)
Check this too:
ReplyDelete" Following the Union Government announcement of the formation of the Telengana state, the demand to bifurcate Tamil Nadu into north and south for “better administrative purposes’’ gained momentum....
"Sethuraman said that the demands for development of the southern districts are often ignored. “Most industries are concentrated in and around Chennai. The 18 southern districts are drought-prone and the people are poverty-stricken. The government has never looked into their problems seriously,’’ he said, adding that a campaign would be launched to create awareness about the demand"

the projected idea is development but it may not be necessarily so.
so seems to be the case in north-east though I don't have links to the stories.
The link doesn't load on my browser- some problem. Anyway, i get the idea what this is about.
ReplyDeleteThere will always be demands from different sections; but should the government give in to fear of violence?
What is more galling than the creation of a new state is the fact that our union government withdrew all cases against the telangana agitators.
This has inspired the opponents of telangana(samaikhya andhra, into saying that they are prepared "to be more violent, hold more hunger strikes and destroy more public property than the Telangana students!" (TOI., page 6, Chennai edition).
