Yesterday I happened to see Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book". He has directed Total Recall and Basic Instinct, so you know what to expect. Black Book has sex, greed and violence, sickening and brutal. To tell the truth I didn't like the film.
But it is impressive, registers itself in mind. The problem for me was that there were too many twists and turns, and i think i was able to predict 75% of them. And then there lots and lots of coincidences, which spoils the film.
I would say that the film is about corruption- how you get corrupted by greed. Everyone betrays everyone. In the last scene, i thought the heroine would get pushed into the lake and the old man would drive away with the money. You get to think, you can't trust anyone here.
This is a second world war film, but if you change the uniform you can place it anywhere. There is nothing specific, except that the Jews get hunted in this film.
As I say, i was disappointed at the end of it. But the scale of sex and violence: you should see the film and see if it brutalises you too.
