Reasons you should use Google Reader and Share more (Hint: Personalised Search Engine)

I remember talking to Siva and saying to him, "I want a blog which will be my brain on the net- i should be able to keep everything I read over the net in one place, and find it when I want to."

With Google Reader, I have.

Let me explain this:

There is a search box in Google Reader, which lets you search among the items you have read, starred, shared and above all- among 'the people you follow'.

I will come to 'the people I follow' later.

I have a bookmarklet in my browser, "note in Reader'. When I find anything remotely interesting I just highlight some part of it, click the "note in Reader" bookmarklet and save in my Reader- there is an option of sharing it to the public or keeping it public.

Why I do this is, if later I want to find that article back, i just have to Google it within my Reader and it comes up.

For example, say I want to find something I read about Tolle:

I search for Tolle in all items, and 102 of them come up- some of which I had read, some are in the sites I have subscribed to- and some come from the people I follow!

This from Guruphiliac, a blog I have subscribed to:

...of Eckhart Tolle. For those who care, we're not denying the existence of pathological thinking, we are simply pointing out that the act of thinking itself does not impede the flow of awareness; it's attachment to thought that subverts. At any rate, thanks to Dougji for the opportunity to spread the Gp gospel a bit.

But this?-

...of Eckhart Tolle this week. It is terrific. The message is that if instead of reacting to life's content that arises in the NOW we become aware of the NOW ITSELF, the undercurrent of stillness, we may realize that we are IT. Content and "the story of 'me'" becomes no longer problematic.Serendipitously related to the Tolle Tube, is a Johnny Newt ...

I don't read Blogmandu- but someone from among the people I follow does- so Google goes in and brings it from him.

So there is all the stuff I read, and all the stuff that the people I follow read: they are all accessible with a single click.

If that is astonishing, take this: there is another way for us to make better use of Reader .

I save bookmarks in Delicious. I just started to, two weeks back. Now, in my network are 2mm- he saves stuff on computers and technology, about which I know nothing, but want to know what is happening there- and also lots of stuff that I find interesting, and clarallum1008 who brings up wonderful bookmarks and bundles them as real-I-zation

What I have done is, I have subscribed to my Delicious network in the Reader. As people save the bookmarks, they come into the Reader. I save some, but definitely not all. But the interesting point is, when I search for something, the Reader brings it up from the items saved on Delicious by the people in my network!

Even in Delicious, you can't search inside the bookmark- but with Reader, you can search inside your bookmarks, and those that people in your network saved!

I think this is just brilliant.

Now, when I want to look for something, the first search I do is in my Reader- I know it will bring up stuff that could be interesting to me and the people I trust.

And when I see something interesting, the first thing I do is, highlight a sentence or two and note it on Reader- I am sure to find the whole page later.

Try it- Reader is a monster when it comes to Personalised Search- now everyone can customise a search enging for himself- just by making use of Google Reader.

  1. Baskar,
I use Google Reader and find it very useful although you use all its features (not I).

  4. Thanks Kartikey. And,

SORRY! EVERYTHING I SAID ABOUT SEARCHING delicious IS NOT TRUE. NEITHER GOOGLE NOR ITS READER WORK THAT WAY.
